My first novel, Home, was published by Red Button Publishing in 2014 and is now available direct from amazon. My first collection of short stories, Glitches, is published by Acorn Books (2014). I am working on various projects in different media (watch this space), a blog tracking my attempts to read and review a novel a week (though the PhD has significantly slowed this project) and a Creative Writing PhD in practice with the Open University having won an Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership studentship. My critical thesis will explore the concept of narrative imperialism and my novel, All The Hollow Places, uses alternative narrative structures to examine the life and legacies of Gertrude Bell. As part of the PhD, I am also working as an intern for the Coastlines project at The Open University, for which I’m devising new creative work and creative writing interventions to encourage a deeper engagement with the coastline of the Isle of Wight through literature.
I teach creative writing for City, University of London, teaching part of the wonderful Novel Studio course and running the City Writes events. I worked for the publishing community Byte The Book for several years and enjoyed collaborating with The Museum of Walking. With the Museum of Walking, I’ve devised walkshops and judged flash fiction competitions culminating in beautiful chapbooks published by Sampson Low Publishers. I have edited several of the Museum’s chapbook series and you can buy them here. Inspired by SoundWalkSeptember, I’ve created ‘The Creative Writing Walkshop’, a Sound Piece designed for listening on the move, and a fictional soundwalk ‘One Circuitous Path’. Click here for further details. I also provide creative writing workshops, mentoring and editing services for authors at various stages in their creative process. Do have a look at my Novel Aid page for further information on these services.
I love talking to and interviewing writers. The City Writes events, running since 2016 have given me ample opportunity to explore my love of talking to fabulous writers of fiction and non-fiction about their work. The love of the live event began with my writer friend, Paul Blaney and Tales of DeCongested, a short story reading event at Foyles in London, back in the early 2000s. I’ve run Literary Salons with author, Heidi James. I’ve interviewed authors for my Authors QH page, I have also run events in bookshops such as the Broadway Bookshop on Broadway Market in East London and most recently, The Yellow Lighted Bookshop in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire when I interviewed debut writer, Hester Musson. I have also been lucky enough to interview the internationally acclaimed, Amit Chaudhuri for the Milton Keynes Literary Festival. You can see the interview here. Please do get in touch if you have an author you’d like me to interview.
